Ideation

The sketches show in interest in Danish modernism both in formal approach and subject matter. Visual treatment is simplistic and geometrically oriented. The single chair that is highlighted is a piece of vernacular furniture from the Danish modern era. Conversely, the “Atomic” word ideation is inspired by American culture of the 1950s and 1960s. Aptly named, the ‘Atomic Age’ this word refers to a sub set of modernity whose primary conceptual motivations derived from the possibilities (and threat) of nuclear power.

Variations

During the refinement process most variations stuck to the “Atomic” nomenclature. Along with a deconstructed view of the as if to suggest a splitting of the atom or reducing the object to its nucleus. The color selections are inspired by the vernacular interior design trends of American household in the 50s and 60s as well as the set designs coming from AMC’s Mad Men.

Final Solution

The final solution reveals a visual and linguistic pivot, moving from the initial “Atomic” title and shifting to “Roulette”. This is inspired again by the vernacular, particularly the energy of the Las Vegas strip in the 1950s and 60s. This approach was inspired by Robert Venturi’s post-modern analysis of the Las Vegas strip. The final composition is meant to express the formal restraint of modernism while offering a kind of visual tension that hits towards postmodern chaos.
