“A Good and Happy Child”, is a horror thriller novel by author Justin Evans about a new father’s growing horror over his own childhood memories and possible brush with the supernatural. The novel explores complex literary themes, such as child psychology, South American folklore, and demonism. Thus, the objective was to create a visual that evokes a childlike feeling with a sinister undertone.
Book Interior & Applied Design
of the book features visual and typographic callbacks to the exterior. The goal for the supportive media was to create a visual system that was coherent and cohesive, hinted and themes present in the book, but did not reveal the plot. Ultimately, the decision was to highlight the seeming innocence of the book’s title and its stark contrast with the menacing background. Together, they work to communicate to the viewer that things are not what they seem.
