BFA catalog

Modular Grid

The client, Metropolitan State University wanted to produce a catalog system for the seniors that participate in the BFA Thesis Exhibition each semester. The deliverable was to include a catalog template and an associated visual identity. Every semester, the BFA Catalog is produced by a new set of BFA seniors, which means every semester a new team inherits the duties of producing the catalog with little to no previous context. The first step in developing a catalog was to come up with a concise and intuitive grid system. The development of the grid system was motivated by the desire to implement a system that was very simple and intuitive yet provided the opportunity for a variety of layouts to facilitate the variety of works that may be showcased in the catalog.

Spreads

Populated Spreads using the modular grid system featured in the Fall 2018 BFA Thesis Exhibition Catalog. The grid system and typographic conventions allows for versatility and can accommodate artwork of various sizes and orientations and quantities. A strong visual consistency is established with the square being a major theme throughout the layout. As shown here, each layout is a variation of the square proportions established on the front cover of the catalog.

Identity & Publication guidelines

The intent for developing a visual identity and associated guidelines was to establish consistency and thus creditability for the client. By creating an identity system for the BFA thesis and associated catalog, MSU Denver’s BFA program now has the opportunity to own a lasting and impressionable visual footprint.

Final Solution

The final solution is a catalog that is systemic enough to feature obvious visual consistencies throughout issues, but also allows each publication to establish its own unique presence as well.
